In 2009, I quit,
Leaving behind my 25 year career in photojournalism, and looking to the future. The industry had become something I was not willing to pursue anymore, and I was ready to take a challenging step into the unknown and reignite my passion for photography. That challenging step gave me the opportunity to reflect on what kind of photographer I really was.
I had surrounded myself with this identity of a photojournalist for so long, I felt like I had to be successful at it in order to justify all the time I put into it. I luckily had some amazing friends in and out of journalism that offered valuable advice and encouraged me to explore all that photography had to offer.
I finally came to a self realization.
Being insulated in photojournalism, I knew nothing about photography and I had to educate myself.
I explored portraiture, composite car photography, wedding photography, travel photography, and many more niches. It was like falling in love with photography all over again. All of these different corners to explore. Knowing that there was a vast ocean of knowledge out there that I didn't have access to when I started in 1987.
While exploring, one dream continued to resonate with me that I have had from the very beginning. What if I could explore the world with my camera and get paid for it. I, like many other photographers my age, wanted to be a National Geographic photographer. The world is different now and we have so much more access to viewers on our own. I also realized I am not one for sitting in a pond, neck deep in water being swarmed by bugs to capture a photo of an alligator...
Travel photography is still a dream that I can hope and work towards. I love storytelling. The world is so visual now and is yearning for content. I strive to create engaging content for brands, cities, and people.
So I am putting my dream out there. This is a collection of the many places my camera has taken me all over the world. It is a collection that I enjoyed creating...and it is just the beginning. You are seeing a collection of photos of my education. Me attempting and failing. Me triumphantly succeeding and triumphantly falling short. Me daring greatly.
I have a lot to learn. Here is to working hard, loving the journey, and exploring what kind of photographer I am right now, not the one I used to be.
