We recently were given the chance to photograph butterflies at the Butterfly Pavilion near Denver. The leader of the Meetup Front Range Photography asked me to give a small demo on flash photography to be used on the butterflies. The reason this is awesome is because the pavilion allowed us to bring in tripods! This opens up so many cool techniques and ideas with the insects as they lounge early in the morning. I tried a few different things but landed on using a super zoomed in speedlite and playing with the color temperature inside my camera to come up with some stunning butterfly photos. All light in the photos is created with a speedlite Godox V860ii.
What are some of your favorite lighting techniques for insects or macro subjects?
I love teaching off-camera flash. I teach one and two day workshops or one on one classes to all experience levels. If you are interested in hosting a workshop or taking a class please contact me!
